Start with the most important things first

Here is an overview of the first practical matters that need to be taken care of in the coming months, once a few weeks have passed.

Estate inventory

You will need to compile a list of the deceased’s assets and debts and register an estate inventory with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). Once this is done you can distribute the estate to the heirs and make changes of ownership.

Who inherits?

Who inherits depends on whether the deceased was married or cohabiting and whether there are children. There may also be a will that says something different. You can read about how inheritance works here.

Distributing the inheritance

When the estate inventory is complete, the inheritance will be divided between the heirs. Here you will find help with what you need to do to divide and take over what is to be inherited.

Finances
